BIOGRAPHY. 2009 Dr. Melanie Bone is nationally known for her educational lectures and expertise on the topic of hereditary cancer syndromes. For the past 20 years, Dr. Bone has been an obstetrician/gynecologist. She now practices only gynecology, specializing in laparoscopic surgery. As both a doctor and a cancer survivor, she is uniquely qualified to educate professionals and the public about the cancer experience. Dr. Bone graduated from the Phillips Exeter Academy and Georgetown University (Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude). She received her medical degree from Albany Medical College where she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honors society. Following her obstetrics and gynecologic residency at George Washington University, she practiced in Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland. In 1991, Dr. Bone moved to Palm Beach, Florida where she currently maintains her private practice. Always a go-getter, Dr. Bone joined the Florida OB/GYN Society and was slated to become president of this statewide organization when, in August of 2000, she was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer at the age of 40. With four children under the age of 5, Dr. Bone needed to survive. She decided to make cancer the BEST thing that ever happened to her. And so she has! Dr. Bone is a respected and recognized speaker, writer, and community leader. She was voted as one of the 55 most influential people in Palm Beach County and was given the title of “inspirer”. Her popular weekly newspaper column called “Surviving Life” appears in the Palm Beach Post and is now syndicated throughout the country. It relates cancer to everyday life and answers cancer-related questions submitted by readers in a “Dear Abby” format. Presently Dr. Bone is writing a book about the day-to-day impact of cancer on family, friends, and coworkers and has founded “Cancer Sensibility”, a non-profit foundation whose mission is to “put cancer in its place” through educational materials, inspirational speaking, and a website with practical gifts for cancer patients.
